Re: Kanye’s 10.0 Record
Is it weird that it’s not even 11am and it feels like the internet is already done talking about this? Yikes.
Anyway, wow, a 10.0! In 2010! The internet is all, like, “this is just a publicity thing so that people will keep reading Pitchfork. Blog buzz, blah blah blah. Just want the mad hitz from @kanyewest.” Why so guarded, guys?
Listen, I’m a staunch defender of Mr. West, maybe more than anyone I can think of, and even I think that calling this record perfect is a little bit of a stretch. Probably would have given it a 9.9 ;) But it’s definitely the hardest-working album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (if not before), which is what p4k is actually saying here. This album belongs in the ranks of OK Computer and Kid A (past 10.0 recipients). Dare you to disagree.
I’m as wary of PR stunts and grandiose statements as any man (honest to blog!), but this is what makes Pitchfork so goddamn interesting. People treat it like it’s a public service or something—like it belongs to us, somehow. And that’s, you know, “fucking ridiculous.”
I like when critics make huge statements. It means we get fun and interesting debate over “ART”, whatever that is. So cool your jets with the ‘WHAT UNDESERVED OMG BOO.’ Let’s chat.
