Ten years ago, I was in an earthquake, in Kodiak, Alaska. I was in elementary school and awesome.

The earthquake was a 7.8 Richter, but it was pretty deep underground, so it wasn’t as bad as a normal 7.8, whatever that means.

My band practice session congregated at the ends of the gymnasium. I was under the basketball hoop, which was shaking uncontrollably, like me. I was very scared.

An hour later I walked home with my brother, terrified. We didn’t say a word; at least, I don’t remember saying anything. At home, a couple of dishes were broken and things were on the floor.

That night, I dreamt of getting in an airplane and not landing on the earth again until it was assured that there would be no more earthquakes.

Earthquakes are terrifying. I haven’t felt a proper level of sympathy for today’s Haitians until I remembered all this.

Jesus. Help Haiti, however you can.
